How RCT Reads Receipts in Hungarian, German, and Dutch

RCT’s item categorization is built around its three core markets, Hungary, Germany, and the Netherlands, so a receipt printed in Hungarian, German, or Dutch gets sorted using categorization tuned for that language. Receipts in other languages still get categorized through a simpler, more general fallback.

A receipt from a Budapest supermarket and one from a store in Amsterdam don’t just use different currencies, they use completely different item names, abbreviations, and store-specific shorthand. Generic translation isn’t enough to sort “tejf” or “H-Milch” into the right category reliably. RCT’s categorization is trained specifically on receipts from its core markets instead of treating every language the same way.

Built around three markets, not translated after the fact

Because RCT launched in the Netherlands, Germany, and Hungary specifically, categorization has been refined against real receipts from all three, not adapted from a single English-language model after the fact. That’s why an item abbreviated the way a Hungarian grocery chain abbreviates it, or a German drugstore receipt’s line-item shorthand, tends to land in the right category without much manual correcting.

A simpler path for everything else

If you scan a receipt in a language outside those three, RCT still processes and categorizes it, just through a more general matching approach rather than the market-specific tuning it uses for Hungarian, German, and Dutch. It won’t be as sharp on local abbreviations it hasn’t seen before, but it still gets items into a reasonable category rather than leaving them unsorted.

Why this is worth mentioning at all

A lot of budgeting apps built for one market bolt on “supports other languages” without actually handling the local quirks that make receipts hard to parse in the first place. RCT’s categorization exists because of those three specific markets, so the language support isn’t an afterthought, it’s the reason the item-level categorization works as well as it does where most of RCT’s users actually shop.
